Even In Spite of Ourselves

tumblr_mkngsoR49T1s7cof4o1_1280 We need to keep praying for this food,
acknowledging our needs as daily,
because in this act of asking,
the prayer awakens
in us
the trust that
God will provide.

But, like the manna that God provided
to Israel in the desert,
this ‘bread’ cannot be stored.

We cannot bind our will today for tomorrow;
we cannot make a pact with Christ that
tomorrow He will be within us,
even in spite of ourselves.

Each day brings with it not only the necessity of eating
but the renewal of our love of and in God.
— thoughts borrowed from Kathleen Norris & Simone Weil

Let us remember that
the life in which we ought
to be interested
is ‘daily’ life. We can,
each of us, only call the present time
our own. Our Lord tells us to
pray for today,
and so He prevents us from
tormenting ourselves about tomorrow.
Gregory of Nyssa
